About Associated Partners

There are five industrial Associated Partners joining SuBiCat by delivering training and research input. Especially in Home- and Heterogeneous catalysis the associated partners have considerable expertise. The companies included achieve optimal inter-sectoral integration and facilitate fast routes to applications.

The theoretical background of the different scientific disciplines will be covered via lectures from the expert scientists from academic, industrial and associated network partners. The lectures will be part of a one-day workshop that will be held connected to each of four of the five planned network meetings. We have identified the following core topics:

  • Homogeneous catalysis and computational chemistry
  • Heterogeneous catalysis and in-situ / operando spectroscopy
  • Separation, recycling and advanced fluids
  • Fungal biology/enzymology, biocatalysis and bioinformatics
  • Engineering of catalytic reactions
  • Industrial catalysis
  • Transferable generic skills

The Essential Role of Industry in Training


Industrial partners will be involved in all aspects of training; technical training through project work, formal lecturing (including the “transferable skills” GRADskills program in which Sasol has already heavily been involved). Industrial partners deliver material on IP, industrial catalysis and sustainability, economic aspects, interview techniques, careers in industry to provide researchers with the best possible career prospects. It should be stressed that all researchers will receive industrial mentorship, by linking researchers to scientists in industry.

Robert Tooze is Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews. He is also SME Member at Sasol Technology UK Ltd.Sasol Technology UK carries out medium and long term R&D in areas of homogenous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis and materials science. We were established in 2002 and since then have established state of the art laboratories with our own catalyst synthesis, testing, and characterisation facilities. Catalyst characterisation techniques we carry out include XPS, XRD, mass spectrometry (MALDI & ESI-MS), vibrational spectroscopy (including in-situ IR & Raman), TPX, TGA-MS, chemisorption and BET facilities.

About Peter:


Peter de Peinder (1967) studied Chemistry, Major Biochemistry, at Utrecht University and became subsequently member of the Vibrational Spectroscopy department as a junior scientist. He joined Philips in 1999 and became senior scientist at the Material Analysis department of Philips Research and from 2000-2004 he was part-time scientist at Utrecht University. In 2006 he left Philips Research Eindhoven and he focused on his activities for VibSpec.

Currently his interests are focused on the interpretation of vibrational spectra, surface enhanced IR and Raman spectroscopy, pharmaceuticals, polymers, process analysis and multivariate data analysis. In 2009 he obtained his PhD in chemistry on the characterization of crude oils by a combination of spectroscopy and chemometrics.

As a part-time member of the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis group of Utrecht University he is involved in in-situ vibrational spectroscopy of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts.

He is a board-member of the Dutch Infrared and Raman Discussion Group (IRDG) since 2002 and of the Section Analytical Chemistry (SAC) of the Dutch Royal Chemical Society (KNCV) since 2008. In 2010 he became an editorial board member of the journal Vibrational Spectroscopy.
