Training programme


SuBiCat delivers a paradigm shift in catalysis research and chemical production methods by training a future generation of scientists in a demanding interdisciplinary approach to sustainable chemicals production from renewable substrates. Ultimately this should provide the expertise required to drive the change from traditional synthetic, high energy demanding methods that produce huge amounts of chemical waste to all-catalytic, low energy demanding, multi-step production methods with little or no waste production exclusively from renewable resources. Ultimately, this should lead to a highly-integrated, and hyper-efficient multistep biorefinery based chemical industry.

To achieve this goal the network, consist of 5 academic institutes and two industrial full partners. They will offer a total of 432 person months of training to 12 early-stage researchers, all of who will obtain a PhD degree. In addition, 60 person months of training will be available for 3 experienced researchers early in their careers. Five additional companies are included in SuBiCat as associated partners to achieve optimal inter-sectoral integration and facilitate fast routes to applications.

The main components of the Training Plan

All researchers will receive a tailor-made a tailor-made SuBiCat-approved training programme consisting of

  • Local ‘on the job’ training with an individual interdisciplinary and collaborative research project.
  • An extensive mobility programme including inter-sectoral secondments.
  • Network wide training events in scientific skills and transferable generic skills.

Local 'on the job' training

The key elements of 'on the job' training will be participate in:

  • an individualised research project
  • post-graduate level teaching programmes provided by the participating institutes

Whereas all SuBiCat’s network partners provide outstanding individual environments for training and research, membership of SuBiCat will offer substantial added value. For example, SuBiCat membership will insure that every participant will be supported by a co-supervisor from a second full partner institution and an industrial mentor in addition to their local supervisor at their home institution. Furthermore, every participant will perform part of their project in at least one other laboratory and another in industry. Special emphasis will be placed on industrial secondments and multi-partner generic training.

An extensive mobility programme including inter-sectoral secondments

SuBiCat offers a tremendous added-value to the training programme of the researchers as it gives them the opportunity to learn new techniques and approaches in scientific and industrial environments from world leaders in the field. Exposure to alternative ways of thinking and addressing problems in the different disciplines will contribute tremendously to the personal development of talented researchers. The researchers have been assigned secondments, co-supervisor and industrial mentors but discussions with the supervisor and co-supervisor early in the training period will confirm that these assignments remain optimal.

Network wide training events in scientific skills and transferables generic skills

SuBiCat provide training in all key experimental techniques relevant to the research proposed on a student exchange basis, covering the full range of possibilities (homogeneous, heterogeneous, and biological catalysis; engineering, and industrial applications). This includes:
